Wanna grab a COFFEE?

Attention coffee lovers! In a restaurant you will always be asked – ¿Quiere café? – Would you like a coffee? A short lesson of coffee types in Canary islands.You also might hear a very popular phrase in spanish – ¨tomar un café¨ (eng.to take a coffee), which means not only the fact of drinking a coffee, but also as a social habit, to meet someone or to have a talk with a friend. That is why it is never drunk on the go, no Starbucks on the island (only the one in the airport which is normally empty). Most importantly – you will never get a coffee menu in Canary islands. Get this handy introduction of main Spanish coffee types to feel like a local!

CAFÉ SOLO

A quick black espresso shot served with at least two sachets of sugar but no milk. Normally, it is very strong and it is advisable to take it with a glass of water, which you can get just by saying ¨Una agua, por favor¨, the waiter will give you a smile for trying!

CAFÉ AMERICANO

Who else if not americans like big amounts of coffee? Translated as an ¨American coffee¨ this a style of coffee prepared by adding hot water to espresso, giving a similar strength but different flavor from regular drip coffee. The strength of Café Americano varies with the number of shots of espresso and the amount of water added. But normally it is less strong than espresso and again – no milk!

CAFÉ CORTADO

Basically, it is a shot of espresso with a dash of hot milk. Canarians also name it as ¨un cortadito¨, which sounds really endearing, you will be treated as a local!

CAFÉ CORTADO LARGO

The same coffee as a Café cortado, but with an extra hot milk. Served in a tall glass, to make it different from Café con leche.

CAFÉ CON LECHE

This is a traditional coffee with milk, usually for the large size coffee lovers. It is still far from the Starbucks style big-cup coffees, but it is the largest size you can get here. Served with a lot of sugar.

LECHE LECHE

A shot of espresso served in a high glass, with a bottom layer of condensed milk and the upper layer of milk. From here comes the name – ¨Leche leche¨, meaning ¨Milk milk¨. Extremely sweet and reminds a licor, which canarians like drinking as a dessert and just sipping it slowly, tasting the mixed flavours. A total boost of energy and sweetness!

BARRAQUITO

It is a canarian specialty, almost the same as ¨Leche y leche¨, consisting of coffee, milk and condensed milk, but also, with a dip of licor, cinnamon and lemon on the top.

LECHE MANCHADA

It is a very weak version of coffee with milk. The name ¨Leche manchada¨ means the stained hot milk, with a drop of coffee just enough to get the milk of a golden – brown colour. Served with a few sachets of sugar. For the milk lovers!

DESCAFEINADO

The same coffee as a coffee with milk, only without caffeine.

CAFÉ CON HIELO

Are you an ice-coffee lover? Here it will be served as a normal coffee with milk with an additional glass of ice cubes that you mix with the coffee. Not the regular Frappuccino with the mashed ice, but still a refreshing cold coffee for a hot day!
