1.THE CHURCH OF SAN JUAN

The small village of Arucas has an amazing architectural pearl merging form the center – the Catholic temple of Arucas.

In the late XVth century it was known as a little temple and during its history being restored and rebuilt many times. The current church was started in the early XXth century by an architect Manuel Vega.

Commonly known as the Cathedral of Arucas, due to its exterior design, it is neither Basilica nor Cathedral. The church has the traditional neo gothic style. It still remains one of the most famous and astonishing buildings in Gran Canaria.

2. PARQUE GOURIE

In the XVth century the main agricultural activity in Arucas was the production of sugarcane.and bananas. But in the late XIXth due to the merits of the marquess Marina Cristina de Habsbourgo-Lorena the city got its actual richness. One of the most beautiful places is the marquess garden now called Parque Gourie.

With approximately 10.000 square meters the garden owns more than 200 different ornamental plants from all over the world. A calm and romantic place to take a walk discovering the plants and gazing at dragon trees.

3. THE AREHUCAS RUM FACTORY

Rum lovers! While being on the island, you cannot miss visiting the best rum factory in Spain! The rum here was produced even earlier than the sugarcane in Cuba. Established in the late XIXth century, the factory produces various types of rums and liquors. From the very beginning it has achieved many awards and recognition all over the world.

The most famous ones you will find at any supermarket here that is Carta Oro (golden rum) Carta Blanca (white rum). Nowadays it has a turnover of about 30 millions of euros and exports every year 54.000 of litres to various countries including China from 2008 and USA from 2011. You can go there to visit the factory, see the process of production and have a degustation of its products. A tip – if you want to buy, in the factory the prices are lower and they have more variety than you can find in a local supermarket.

4. LA MONTAÑA DE ARUCAS

The volcanic hill that surrounds the village of Arucas offers you an incredible panoramic view of the valley, mountains and ocean of the background.

From the top you will see the village with its black pearl – the Cathedral of Arucas. There is a restaurant El Mesón de la Montaña with a nice garden and incredible views. The daily meals vary from 15-25 euros.
