Magical Dams

Even though the island is only 1500 sqare km, it holds about 69 dams for its irrigation. They are not only the water producers for the agriculture, but also offer the incredible views for the island adventurers to discover. The main are Presa de Chira, Presa de Soria and Presa de las Niñas.

We recommend you them for a midday trip as it is also a perfect place to take some walks and get a little bit lost in the magical valleys!

1. PRESA DE CHIRA

When heading to the centre of the island, the first dam you find is the Presa de Chira. It is the second biggest dam on the island when evaluating the capacity.

3. PRESA DE LAS NIÑAS

Camping. This is one of the most beautiful places where you can camp in Gran Canaria near the water of the dam. It is necessary to ask the permission for camping. It is free, but you must ask for it one week before.

During the wet seasons (october – april) the rain fills the damn so that it forms small waterfalls. It is an amazing show of nature!

Presa de las Niñas is has the biggest water capacity of all the 69 dams of Gran Canaria. The name means – the dam of the girls.

The surroundings of the Presa de las Niñas invites you to take a walk in the green valley enjoying the sun and fresh air. Perfect place to have a picnic! Surrounded by pine woods, you can take a walk to another dam, la Presa de Chira. In the opposite side you can see the Roque Nublo – the most famous 80 metres rock on the island.

How to get there? Follow the map direction from Maspalomas, it takes less than an hour to arrive to the first dam.
